Silence can Express the Inexpressible
Luna sat in her room, staring at the bed, where her battle gear was laid out. This would not be the first time anyone would find her in that pose. Elrohir walked in with his brother and they both looked at the various things laid out on the bed.
“You have your armor, your daggers, your sword and bow and arrows…” Elladan said, looking at Luna. Luna nodded, but didn’t say anything. She was busy, polishing a dagger. She nodded.
Elrohir walked over to his wife and started to rub her shoulders. She still hadn’t quite gotten over watching Kerowyn struggle to find peace, and the fights between the two had almost destroyed a friendship. During the time, Luna had lost the child she was carrying, making her miserable. She had actually disappeared for a month or so, worrying everyone in Rivendell, and had only come back a few weeks ago. Then of course, they had gotten summons to battle. Luna, Kerowyn, Lindir, Searyn, Elenwe, Legolas, Elladan, and others from Imladris had been called. They were to leave that day, but had postponed it due to Kerowyn running a fever…and Elenwe having fainted in the dining hall that morning. Luna hadn’t even appeared, this was the first time Elrohir had seen her since he woke that morning.
There was a knock on the cottage door, and Elrond appeared. He had been making daily visits to the home to check on Luna, who had yet to say a word. She had been silent for the few weeks she had been home, not answering anyone’s questions, not even Elenwe’s or Elrohir’s. Elrond looked at Elrohir and Elladan, question in his eyes. Both shook their heads no. Elrond sighed, and his shoulders went down in defeat. Everyone was at a loss. Elrohir looked at his father, signaling him to follow him to the kitchen.
The group left Luna alone with her weapons, and went out to the kitchen. Elenwe and Legolas were there, waiting for everyone else. Elrond looked at his son. “She hasn’t said anything…at all?” He asked. Elrohir shook his head.
“Not a word. I don’t understand it. She has been through worse, but she is acting differently.” Elrohir said.
“Not only that, but she has had nightmares…Legolas, Elrohir and I wake up to her screams sometimes. But she refuses to tell us about them.” Elenwe said, entering into the conversation. Elrohir and Legolas nodded.
“What does she say when she cries out?” Elrond asked. The nightmares may help figure out why Luna was silent.
“Last night was confusing. Elenwe recognized it as Drowish, which is odd; because Luna barely understands it…she can’t speak it.” Elrohir said.
Elenwe again nodded her agreement. “I understood. She was actually, for part of it, yelling at Kerowyn. But the language changed.”
Legolas decided to step in there. “’Dan…do you remember when Luna was little, and she spoke very little Quenya, and instead spoke a different language?”
Elladan nodded. “Carinebeth said it was the language of the moon elves. Her father was insistent that Luna only speak in that tongue when she was younger.”
Legolas nodded again. Elrohir looked thoughtful. “I had forgotten that. I know she has had some nightmares about her father of late, but I don’t know what has been going on in them, other than she seems to replaying that one night over and over again, and the same with them man who tried to strangle her. But she doesn’t recognize the man who tried to strangle her.”
Elenwe looked down. All but Luna, and Elenwe had recognized who the man was that tried to kill her. It was her brother…___Arithilquen_____...and he was there to seek revenge. Until that moment, all had been under the impression that he had been killed in battle. Apparently they had been wrong, gravely wrong.
Elrond shook his head. “Elrohir, do you know where she may have gone?” Elrohir shook his head.
