Elven Chronicles

Sea Elf Culture

Page history last edited by Kerowyn Linderion 2 yrs ago

The Teleri, or Sea Elf, was the largest of the three hosts of elves who set out on the Great Journey to answer the summons of the Valar to Aman. Their name means ‘Lastcomers’ or 'Hindmost', because they were the most reluctant to leave Middle-earth. They were often delayed along the way and they fell behind the other two hosts of Elves.

The Teleri were led by the brothers, Olwë and Elwë (Thingol). They were delayed on the Great Journey in East Beleriand, and they missed the first voyage of Elves to Aman.

At that time, Elwë was lost in Nan Elmoth, and a major split in the Teleri occurred when a large number stayed in Beleriand to search for him.

The Nandor and the Sindar Elves are descended from the Teleri.

When he realized that they had been left behind by the other Elves, Olwë led his people to the Mouth of Sirion where they were instructed in the arts of the sea by Ossë and Uinen. That was where the Teleri developed their love of the sea which would later lead them to become great shipwrights.

Many of the Teleri went to Aman on the second journey west - pulled on an island from the Bay of Balar by Ulmo. They were anchored for a time in the Bay of Eldamar at the request of Ossë, where they could live within sight of Aman within the light of the trees, but still be surrounded by the sea that they loved.

The Teleri were instructed in the art of music by Ulmo, and were the fairest singers among the Eldar. Because of this, they were also called the Lindar.

Some of the Sea Elves who wished to not sail stayed under the watchful eye of Carinebeth son of Derin King of Larsirin until it was flooded over.

Personality:

The ocean is a dynamic place, on the edge between order and chaos. Yet predictable currents still exist. Sea elves are usually of the mindset that deep attentiveness to one’s environment is the key to staying alive and prospering. It is a basic teaching of Ulmo, the Lord of the Seas.

Because of this this, sea elves tend to be reserved, private and sometimes secretive.

Physical Description:

They are fair and appear to be eternally youthful. They keep their youthful appearance throughout their lifetime and seem to just be of a teen age.

Ways of the Sea Elves:

They usually make their boats of seaweed and drift logs.

They would never harm a sea mammal or one that dwells in water.

They control the waters and they react to their emotions.

Relations with Other Races:

Sea Elves have a breif relation with that of the "Wood Elves" seeing as Lord Celeborn was once a Sea Elf but changed his heritage to Wood Elf upon his marriage with Galadriel.

They have breif relations with all elven races.

No other relatioin listed.

Religion:

Ulmo ("pourer, rainer") is... lord of waters... he dwells in the Outer Ocean or in the waters underneath Middle Earth, governing the movement of all oceans and rivers. Ulmo cares greatly for the Children of Ilúvatar, advising them by direct appearances, by dreams, or through the music of waters....

Ulmo, Heru Rasa, or in English - Lord of the Seas, was second in power of the Valar only to Manwe. He was one of the nine Aratar, or those of chief power and reverence. He was a loner, the only one of the Valar to not have a wife (wife here is not in the common sense, but one who has similar interests and share deeds). He would never stay in one place for long, and took to resting anywhere he might be. He seldom came to the Councils of Mahanaxar, and only when in great need. He preferred to stay in Arda, not by walking on the land, as his form would fill man or elf with great dread. All waters were under his government; bays, rivers and even the waters under the earth. It is through these that he kept in touch with Arda, and thus knew more of the goings on with the children of Iluvatar than even Manwe.

Ulmo's vassal Osse, and Osse's wife Uinen were, to the elves, the best known of the Maiar. Through them Ulmo would learn much of the elves.

Ulmo held Manwe closest of all Vala. This was on account of the similarity of the elements of their domains (wind and water). The rains were the result of the joining of their elements and thus the formation of clouds. It was because of this friendship that Ulmo would often inform Manwe of the news of Arda, particularly of the elves.
